D2: A Steel That Stands the Test of Time

By Buck Knives

Heritage is something that is passed down—an inheritance.  Legacy is built on heritage.  At Buck Knives, the heritage of crafting high quality knives has spanned five generations.  Staying true to the past, the Heritage collection of fixed blade knives reflects the celebrated legacy of Buck Knives and spotlights craftsmanship worthy of the Buck name.

We are often asked, “Why use D2 steel? Isn’t there a better steel option?” D2 was chosen to set this collection apart from standard and pro level options, and harkens back to our origins.

D2 has enhanced qualities similar to Buck’s first factory production steel, 440C.  While stainless steels can be more corrosion resistant, D2 is a high carbon, high chromium tool steel with outstanding wear resistance. These blades are tough, able to maintain their integrity and avoid chipping even through the toughest of tasks. The combination of hardness, edge retention and corrosion resistance make D2 a good choice for hunting or everyday utility blades.

We are often asked, “Why use D2 steel? Isn’t there a better steel option?”

D2 offers a great balance between value and performance compared to other steels on the market today.  For best performance, we harden to a Rockwell hardness of RC 58-61.  When choosing a blade steel, knife buyers should consider that D2 can be more difficult to sharpen when compared to 420HC because it's a harder steel. However, it will maintain an edge and stay sharper longer. While there are at-home sharpening options, Buck also offers re-sharpening through its warranty department for a nominal fee.

Adding a touch of refinement, the DymaLux cocobolo handle offers an extremely dense, waterproof handle that is harder than almost every hardwood available.  Palm swells and shallow finger grooves provide a secure and comfortable grip, giving confidence in every cut.  The aluminum pommel and guard provide the perfect combination of beauty and balance.

Buck’s Heritage collection is an excellent option for use in challenging conditions with the resolve of generations of knives that have come before.  We look forward to sharing our legacy with you.

History of the Northwest – Edward Pulaski and the Great Fire of 1910

“We reached the mine just in time, for we were hardly in when the fire swept over our trail. I ordered the men to lie face down upon the ground of the tunnel and not dare to sit up unless they wanted to suffocate, for the tunnel was filling with fire gas and smoke. One man tried to make a rush outside, which would have meant certain death. I drew my revolver and said, ‘The next man who tries to leave the tunnel I will shoot.’ ”- Edward Pulaski
